Course Description: Discuss pathological conditions with the goal of being able to make informed decisions about the safety and applicability of massage modalities. Develop critical thinking skills to be able to find information independently, and to identify the variables that contribute to informed decisions. It is necessary for the massage therapist to be able to identify pathological conditions in a therapeutic setting. This course will enable students to identify these conditions and determine if they are indicated or contraindicated in bodywork with possible adverse reactions to massage.
Course Objectives: Students will be able to describe the effect massage has on the physiologic systems; explain the differences in the systemic and local indications and contraindications for massage; identify the proper choice of modality for the client's individual situation; and when and how to refer clients if necessary.
